Dental Crowns: Restoring Strength, Function, and Beauty to Your Smile
Dental crowns are one of the most common and effective solutions in restorative dentistry. Whether you have a damaged tooth or a large cavity or want to improve the appearance of your smile, crowns offer a durable and natural-looking way to restore oral health and aesthetics.
What are Dental Crowns?
A dental crown is a custom “cap” that fits over a damaged or decayed tooth. It is designed to reproduce the shape, size, and color of your natural teeth. Crowns may be made from materials such as porcelain, ceramic, metal alloys, or a combination. Once placed, the crown covers all visible portions of the tooth above the gum line, restoring its strength and appearance.
What are Dental Crowns Used For?
Dental crowns are used for both restoration and cosmetic dentistry. They are commonly used to:
- Protect a weak or cracked tooth from additional damage or breaking
- Restore a worn-down tooth
- Protect a tooth after root canal therap
- Hold a dental bridge in place
- Cap a dental implant
- Improve the look of unattractive teeth.
Crowns are often the go-to solution when a filling is insufficient, but the tooth is not so damaged or diseased that it must be removed.
The Process for Getting a Crown
Getting a dental crown usually requires two visits to our office:
- Preparation Visit
- Dr Mischissin examines the tooth and may take X-rays.
- The tooth is filed down to make room for the crown. If there is extensive damage or decay, Dr. Mischissin may build up the tooth’s core
- We take digital impressions of the tooth to ensure a precise fit.
- A temporary crown can be placed while the permanent crown is crafted in a dental lab.
- Placement Visit
- We remove the temporary crown. Dr. Mischissin carefully checks the permanent crown for fit and color.
- Minor adjustments may be made for comfort and bite alignment.
- Once everything is just right, the crown is cemented into place.
